| Our youth center, Knellan, is
situated on the ground floor of our old elementary school. (We have a newer elementary
school here in Eskifjordur now.) The opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 17 to 19 but on Fridays from 20 to 2330. It is open from early September until late in May. Every day, except Friday, we come together in out youth center to play chess, snooker, table-tennis or cards. We also talk a lot about various subjects, just like other teenagers do in their freetime. We have a computer, we use a lot. NO television or video, because we think it“s better to entertain ourselves instead of having others to do it.. On Fridays there are always dances, that are dedicated to a single subject. For example there is a fancy-dress ball, a wedding dance and a hairstyle-dance every year. We compete in miscellaneous events every year, over the months, it is open. We have a sculpture competition, a nonalcholic drink-contest, a talent-contest, and the world competition in a card-game named Olsen Olsen, to name some of the events. We also compete in a the Competition of Four Events, it is to say, in table-tennis, billiard, dart throwing and chess. Every year we choose our club-giant. They who get that title are those who show an outstanding ability to do something good and for our youth center activity. Since Knellan started we have obtained some traditions, like joining a girl and a boy, unexpectately, in a dance. They have to dance at least three dances before breaking up. We often have a program late in the evening (or about 10 o'clock) and there is always somebody asked to give an act there. At the last dance before X-mas, everyone brings a gift and the gifts are put into a sack. Knellan also brings one big and an expensive gift that some lucky kid gets after the gifts are mixed up and everyone gets one. In Knellan there is a restricted ban of smoking, drinking alcohol or using other intoxicating materials. The kids here have never broken this ban. We, the teenagers in Knellan, believe that it is normal and healthy not to mix the creative work we do in Knellan with the distructive things like alcohol and other intoxicating stuff. The Knellan is well equipped with entertaining materials. We have got everything we could possibly want. All the people in Eskifjordur, the local authorities, all the companies plus members of clubs here, have put much money in the building of this organization and everyone here is very positive about the work that has been taking place here over the years. Our motto is: Healthy kids having healthy fun. |
